Mikel Arteta has expressed deep concern over Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury, which forced him to leave the pitch in the 24th minute of Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Saka, who was visibly struggling with the injury, left Selhurst Park on crutches, prompting Arteta to admit his worries. “He felt something in his hamstring, he couldn’t continue,” Arteta said, noting that further assessment was required to understand the extent of the injury. However, Arteta acknowledged the difficulty in providing an immediate diagnosis, adding, “It’s very difficult to do that now.”

This injury is a significant blow for Arsenal, especially following the news that Raheem Sterling, who has made 11 appearances for the club since joining on loan from Chelsea, sustained a training ground injury just a day before Saka’s setback. Arteta confirmed that Sterling would also undergo tests to determine the severity of his injury, expressing concern about losing two key players within a 24-hour period. “To lose two players within 24 hours, it’s not good,” Arteta said, though he remained hopeful the team would adapt and respond to the challenges posed by the demanding schedule.

Saka’s hamstring issues are not new. He had previously suffered a similar injury during the October international break, which sidelined him for several weeks, including Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Bournemouth. Arteta noted that while it was unclear if this injury was exactly the same, it was in the same leg. “It’s in the same leg. He had the third minor injury—I don’t know how big this is going to be,” Arteta explained, expressing concern about the recurrence of injuries in the same area.

Despite these setbacks, Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Crystal Palace moved them within three points of Premier League leaders Liverpool. Gabriel Martinelli, who replaced Saka on the right wing, scored during the match, with Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Declan Rice also getting on the scoresheet. This victory showcased Arsenal’s strength, but the absence of Saka could be a major issue for the team moving forward, as both Paul Merson and Jamie Redknapp highlighted his importance to the squad, especially in crucial games.
